In a new interview with Glamour UK, the singer, 39, says she took a much-needed break after realizing that she'd go dependent on them to brand her feel confident.
"Make-up was a big thing for me; I had been wearing it since I was, similar, 16 years old," the magazine's cover girl said. "And then, as I got into the music globe, information technology was what you did every twenty-four hours to do your telly, or to do your shoot. So, I did it because I thought that's what you lot're supposed to practice. And I realized I became addicted to information technology; I didn't feel comfortable without it."

Keys surprised her fans when she gave up makeup and started a #NoMakeup campaign on social media in 2016. During an interview with TODAY that twelvemonth, the singer described the option as an empowering and freeing i.
"We put and so many limitations on ourselves. We put limitations on each other. Society puts limitations on united states. And in a lot of means, I'm sick of it. I'm over it, to be honest."
She also made information technology clear that she wasn't swearing off makeup forever.
"I love makeup! I honey my lip gloss, I honey my blush, I dear my eyeliner. It'south non about that," she said. "At the same fourth dimension, I don't desire to experience appreciative to have to do it."
Flash forwards four years and Keys is wearing makeup once over again, but merely when she feels similar it. She's also worked hard to stay truthful to her personal mode throughout her career.

Presently, Keys will be releasing her own lifestyle and beauty make named Keys Soulcare, and she told the mag that she's always been passionate nearly peel care.
"I've always had a challenging time with my pare and having to figure out how to manage it, and exist in the spotlight," she recalled to the magazine. "Having to constantly exist in this crazy cycle of putting on make-up to cover the bumps and scars and and then considering I had brand-upward on nether the hot lights, there were more bumps and scars.
